  • MNOs may have the leeway to opt for the ‘best-of-breed’ components through soaring number of end-to-end vendors and RRUs.
  • Inroads made by RRU in the industry with the competitive pricing and advanced features is a ‘game-changer’

Mavenir has announced the first commercial portfolio of OpenRAN RRUs with the O-RAN interface. The portfolio is said to be comprised of 2×20W RRUs for B3, B7, B20 and 2×40W for B5, B28, B71 which will potentially be available by June 2020.

According to sources, the robust-looking portfolio is in line with the innate ability to initiate the development from walled garden systems to a multi-supplier and a wider ecosystem which propels swift innovation and reduces total cost of ownership—all this based on OpenRAN principles.

With the RRU being totally specified by 3GPP meant for the air interface and O-RAN for the RRU, MNOs may have the leeway to opt for the ‘best-of-breed’ components through soaring number of end-to-end vendors and RRUs.

GM and SVP of Mavenir’s Radio Access Solutions Mikael Rylander stated the significance of the collaboration and stressed that the inroads made by RRU in the industry with the competitive pricing and advanced features is a ‘game-changer’ being at par with the competition in price and technical specification.

He also added that the open architecture principles and wider ecosystem have created novel opportunities for cutting edge, flexible and cost-effective implementations for the advent of 5G, network densification and deployments in industry and enterprise segments. He did mention that the traditional MNO deployments would have a new alternative.

Chairman & CEO of MTI Allen Yen stated that MTI is providing sophisticated RRUs compliant with the O-RAN 7.2× functional split to offer a standardized and open interface solutions fostering the transformation of mobile network to the next generation RAN architecture.
